Do you remember Little Bear?

Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak is such a staple of every children’s library but do you remember the Little Bear books that he illustrated?

Written by Else Holmelund Minarik and illustrated by Maurice Sendak Little Bear is one of my favourite stories from my childhood. I still have my original copy with my name written in shaky printed letters on the inside cover and my son has a photo of Little Bear flying off to the moon hanging over his bed. Little Bear stories are simple, heart warming and show a relationship between mother and son. These stories remind me of being a little kid and Little Bear reminds me so much of my son with his wild imagination and loving nature.

Lately when pushed for a story off the top of my head I have been telling the story of the Goblin from Little Bears Visit its a simple tale of a Goblin that gets scared and his shoes chase after him. I’m not sure why this story sticks out in my mind but it seems to be engaging enough to entertain a 3 year old who refuses to sleep. These stories are adorable and the illustrations are just beautiful. The images of Little Bear and his mother are so tender, in other stories you see his relationship with his grandparents and friends, these are gentle stories mostly published in the 1950s & 60s but they remind me of an earlier time.

There are so many books to choose from these days its great to revisit some favourites from your childhood. You child will love hearing about what you loved as a kid and you will introduce a new reader to a special story you can share together. Reading these stories to my child warms my heart and makes a special bedtime memory for the both of us.

Introduce your child to your favourite childrens story and share with them a love of reading.
